A joint symposium on research and development in Russia Far East between UTokyo and Russian Academy of Sciences was held

On Friday, December 6, the First Symposium on Research and Development in Russia Far East was held at Sanjo Conference Hall in the University of Tokyo Hongo Campus. The symposium was coordinated by Prof. Yamanouchi and President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Prof. Alexander Sergeev.

The main participants from Russia were Prof. Alexander Sergeev, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Prof. Alexander Khokhlov, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Prof. Valentin Sergienko, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Chairman of the Far East Division of Russian Academy of Sciences, and Prof. Aslan Tsivadze. Ms. Maria Ganchenkova, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Communications, Government of Sakhalin Region, Dr. Dmitry Kovalev, Head of the Laboratory of Wave Dynamics and Coastal Currents, Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics, Far Eastern Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, Dr. Alexandr Zakupin, Deputy Director on Research, Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics, Far Eastern Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, and Dr. Vladimir Pischalnik of Sakhalin State University represented Far East Russia and gave presentations on the research activities in the Sakhalin region.

From the University of Tokyo, researchers from Department of Earth and Planetary Science, School of Science, Frontier Research Center for Energy and Resources, School Engineering, Institute of Industrial Science, Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute, and Earthquake Research Institute attended the meeting and gave presentations on their researches.

After the symposium, a mixer was held and the attendees discussed in detail in what research areas and how future academic exchanges between UTokyo and Russia Far East could be conducted.
